Based on historical photographs of séances, the women of Ectoplasm subvert the scrutiny of the camera’s scientific gaze. The early pioneers of feminist performance also understood the radical use of spectacle. I think of Carolee Schneeman and Hannah Wilke as latter-day mediums.
